Tell me about a piece of direct feedback you recently gave to a colleague. How did he or she respond? How do you like to receive feedback from coworkers or managers?

At my current job, I meet with a junior quality engineer twice a week, and he is trying to become a software engineer. The session was not very efficient because I had to explain a lot of concepts that I went over with him previously. I knew that he did not review the stuff we went over during each session. However, it is also not my place to tell him what to do outside of work.

I explained the situation, and tell him that this is not good for us. I don’t mind going over the stuff over and over again, but we should see some improvement after each time I go over the same stuff. It’s not good for us to always go back to zero. I explained what I would do if I were in his situation. I would spend some of my own time reviewing the stuff we went over and try to remember as much as I can after each session, and do some practice on my own.

He understood the situation, and admitted that he did not spend much time on it, but will try to do better. Now our session is more efficient than before. Myself, I like to receive feedback, and I use feedback as extra information to help me grow and improve.
